What is Microdermabrasion?
The idea behind microdermabrasion is that it is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to rejuvenate the skin improving its tone and texture. It entails the use of a special abrasive surface which is moved over the skin to sand away the thick outer layer of the skin to reveal the ‘new’ skin underneath.
This type of treatment works on all skin types making subtle changes ensuring that there is no change in skin colour or scarring.
What are the types of Microdermabrasion?
There are different abrasive surfaces designed for this treatment. The first, a diamond-tipped handpiece that is designed to gently exfoliate the skin while performing a suction function to clean them off the surface immediately. This targets more sensitive regions such as the eyes.
Crystal Microdermabrasion uses a handpiece that sprays a layer of fine crystals to rub away the outer layer of the skin. As with the diamond handpiece, the dead skin cells are immediately removed through the suction function.
What are the side effects of Conventional Microdermabrasion?
Under an experienced hand, the side effects of microdermabrasion should only include mild swelling, tenderness and redness that should reside within a few hours of the treatment. Minor bruising may also occur due to the suction process. In rare cases, it may be too harsh o the skin causing dermatitis and allergic reactions.
It would be recommended to keep the skin hydrated and protected from the sun with moisturiser and sunscreen.
