Lady under the sun trying to cover her face

It’s no secret that the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are the number one cause of premature ageing, also known as sun damage. Some sunlight is alright as long as you have proper protection from overexposure and aren’t stingy on the sunblock!

However, too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays might mean eventual sun damage. These UV rays can penetrate the skin in the deepest layers, damaging and killing the skin cells. It can even alter your DNA! This can negatively affect your ageing process and cause premature skin ageing. This often manifests as brown spots, wrinkles, fine lines, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tones and even skin cancer. [1]

It’s important to note that no matter how much sun damage your skin has suffered, much of it can still be reversed.

Damage control with sunblock

Lady applying sunblock

If you haven’t already been using sunblock, then start as early as you can. Getting the right protection for your skin can help reverse sun damage as your skin naturally repairs itself - producing healthy skin cells and collagen. Apply two fingers’ amount of sunblock 30 minutes before heading out.

Introduce Retinol to your routine

If you’re not pregnant, vitamin A is a definite must-have in your fight against sun damage. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and helps increase collagen production and encourages cell turnover [2], both of which help reverse sun damage and treat sun spots.

When frequently used, it can retexturise your skin, even out dark spots and smoothen out wrinkles. Be careful with retinol as it can lead to irritation - so start with a lower dosage.

Use Vitamin-C skincare products

Stock up on antioxidants like Vitamin C to combat the harmful effects of sun damage. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and sun spot removal treatment that can help combat hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. It can contribute to the acceleration of collagen and elastin production, and you’d be able to revitalise your complexion. With time, you may reverse the effects of sun damage.

Add Chemical Peels

Heard of BHA and AHAs? Chemical peels improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin to speed up the process of skin renewal. By exfoliating the skin, the new skin underneath may appear smoother, less dull and pigmented and reduce fine lines. As it is a form of chemical exfoliant, be gentle with the products you choose - Carry out a patch test first before applying it on your face.

Check-in for a facial treatment

Besides adding skincare products to try to treat sun spots and reverse the effects of skin damage, you can also consider popping by to a dermatologist or medical aesthetic studio for an extra boost of anti-ageing treatments. For example, the JetPRO at Cambridge Therapeutics. Using advanced skincare jet propulsion technology, it works deep into the dermis while being non-intrusive and pain-free.

By using the patented JetPRO handpiece, the jet streams place vigorous pressure on the skin surface to exfoliate the skin with water-based microdermabrasion. The skin will also be stretched to create microchannels and enable hydroporation to distribute a unique blend of nutrient-rich serums into the skin. This is all done while ensuring the client is comfortable and achieving visible results. Some helpful boosters are:

  • Needleless Rejuran - a blend of 6 vital ingredients to help with hyperpigmentation, brightening and stimulating collagen. It contains hyaluronic acid and panthenol - encouraging skin repair, and retaining moisture. It also contains Vitamin C, which is great for managing skin damage.
  • Anti-Aging Complex 1 - the foundation for most of JetPro’s treatments, this solution helps reduce deep wrinkles and stretch marks while providing deep hydration to the skin. It contains several hyaluronic acids and bio-peptides that can help with our skin’s overall texture and tone. With an increase of bio-peptides, it can enhance the skin’s natural biological functioning to undo the signs of ageing and sun damage.

Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion for sun spots removal treatment

This procedure helps sun-damaged skin by renewing skin growth, enabling better product absorption and healthier skin. A minimally invasive procedure, microdermabrasion helps exfoliate dead skin, improve skin tone, and texture. Instead of using a blade, fine particles are used to create a mild surface for exfoliation.

For a softer approach, the AquaJet Microdermabrasion Facial is a 3-step Korean Therapy that can renew skin while providing it with nutrients for a natural glow. Using a gentler jet water stream and extremely fine aluminium oxide powder, it is safer than your usual microdermabrasion. By delivering a blend of skin solutions, it will effectively deep cleanse your pores without damaging the skin while at the same time improving your complexion, smoothening, and tightening it.

As with all medical issues, prevention is better than cure and the same applies to sun damage. Always remember to apply sunblock or sunscreen religiously, especially if you know you’ll be out and about under the sun. It’s also important to note that sun damage isn’t final and you can still take steps to improve the condition of your skin by giving it a little more lovin’ with a proper skincare routine and consulting your doctor.

Keeping up to the good-skin game can be hard. From fighting those pesky pimples past puberty to identifying your first signs of wrinkles, men have traditionally kept their skincare routine simple.

Understandably, starting a skincare routine can seem intimidating and you’ve probably found yourself wondering whether toners and serums are necessary. Read on for this set of quick and easy tips to follow for your beginner’s skincare routine!

Identify your skin type

Before you deep dive into the kind of products you should use, it’s important to understand your skin type to know what fits best. Men tend to have oily and thicker skin due to testosterone — this is often why you’d notice your skin being shiny and greasy, and why many men’s skincare products are formulated to combat oil!

If your skin stings and burns after trying products you may have sensitive skin. Choose products that have more natural ingredients with fewer irritants. It’s also important to figure out your triggers so you can avoid the ingredient in other products moving forward. You could get a patch test from a dermatologist or allergist to see what could be causing a reaction.

Flaky, itchy or rough skin are common indicators of dry skin, so load up on a heavy moisturiser and avoid harsh, drying soaps. If it happens often and drying is severe, you may need to consult a doctor.

Lastly, combination skin would have a mix of oily and dry patches. Look for products that are specifically formulated for combination skin.

Now that you’ve identified your skin type, here are 5 tips you can consider:

1. Wash your face daily with a cleanser

If you’ve been washing your face with just water, you’re doing it wrong. Using a cleanser can help slough away dead skin cells and dirt that make your face look dull and clog your pores. Use a cleanser suitable for your skin type in the morning, night, and after you exercise. For a deeper cleanse, use an exfoliating scrub once a week. This can also stimulate the growth of new skin cells for a fresher face.

2. Moisturise

Adding moisturiser to your daily skincare routine is very important. It works by trapping water in your skin, which can help reduce fine lines and brighten the skin. For the best results, apply immediately after you bathe as damp skin can seal in moisture. Similarly, choose a moisturiser that is best suited for your skin type. For example, If you have oily skin, pick a water-based product.

Shaving dries out the skin too! After you’re done shaving, apply moisturiser for maximum effect.

3. Hydration is key

Yes, moisturising and hydrating are two different things! On top of moisturising your skin, your skin needs moisture from the inside as well. Get at least six glasses of water a day, and avoid drinking too much alcohol and caffeine. These two beverages can dehydrate your skin. If you want to get ahead of the hydration game, give your skin a boost with hydrating facials like:

The Aqua Jet Facial — This treatment involves a 3-step Korean Therapy to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells and provide hydration. The radial tips of the Aquajet Facial tool allow rapid diffusion of the solution into your skin. While providing hydration, this treatment can also improve complexion, smoothen skin texture, tighten skin and increase skin radiance.

The OxyREPLENISH — This treatment uses technology that is capable of generating up to 98% of pure oxygen, which is infused at high pressures to reach the basal layer of the skin. By plumping up dehydrated skin cells, it replenishes your skin with oxygen and hydration. It can also give your skin other nourishing ingredients like peptides. This results in skin renewal and clarity — giving the skin the moisture it needs to leave it supple and smooth. You’d see an improvement in your skin structure and reduction of wrinkles in just one treatment.

4. Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock!

We cannot stress this enough, especially in sunny Singapore. The sun weathers your skin faster than anything else — its damaging UV rays can speed up the ageing process by slowing collagen production and cell growth. [1] It is also the number one cause of skin cancer. If possible, avoid the sun when you can and invest in a good sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for broad-spectrum protection.

If you’re out and about, remember to reapply sunblock every two hours or more, especially if you’re doing strenuous physical activity.

5. Stay healthy

Taking care of your body will help it to glow on the outside too. Load up on fruits and vegetables by selecting a variety of fresh produce with antioxidants, like blueberries and carrots. It can help fight free radicals, inflammation, sun damage, and ageing. [2] Stick to a sleep schedule with at least eight hours of slumber to give your cells time for skin repair.

Hopefully, this set of tips will help you in building an effective skincare routine that works best for you. Once you’ve gotten familiar with these tips, you can expand with other products that can benefit your skin. From anti-ageing to brightening, there are a variety of products available for you to achieve glowing skin, in and out.

Sweating is a good thing. It’s your body’s natural way of cooling off — its sweat glands release water to the surface of your skin when the temperature rises. It may also be a sign that we got a good workout in.

However, there are instances or conditions where we sweat more than intended, even when temperatures are cool or when we aren’t physically active. This may be hyperhidrosis. Currently, it is estimated that the prevalence of hyperhidrosis at 4.8% in the United States. [1]

What is hyperhidrosis?

If you think you suffer from excessive sweating, you could ask yourself these questions:

  • When you’re not physically exerting yourself
  • Do you often have sweat-soaked clothing?
  • Do you sweat even when you’re sitting in a cool environment?
  • Does sweating interfere with your everyday life?
  • Does your skin stay wet for long periods of time?
  • Do your family members suffer from the same issue as well?

If you find yourself nodding to these questions, these may be signs that you’re dealing with hyperhidrosis. A person with hyperhidrosis sweats more than what’s physically necessary. Excessive sweating can be caused by anything from low blood sugar to hormonal issues. There are two types of hyperhidrosis:

Primary hyperhidrosis — this is the most common cause of hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately, there is no underlying cause for this issue and could be hereditary, typically starting from childhood.

Secondary hyperhidrosis — this could be related to underlying health issues. For example, a type of medication may be a trigger, or other conditions like diabetes, thyroid issues, or menopause.

Hyperhidrosis generally does not pose any serious risk to your physical health, however, it can take a toll on your mental health, confidence and quality of life.

What can I do to keep my sweaty armpits in check?

There are some small tweaks and changes in your life habits that you could try doing to keep your sweaty underarms in check. These are:

Switch to an antiperspirant deodorant

Typical deodorants are usually designed only to mask the smell of our sweat. Antiperspirant deodorant, however, works in a way that creates little plugs in your sweat glands to stop it from perspiring. Pick up a clinical strength one to ensure the highest dosage of ingredients like aluminium zirconium. Try avoiding products that contain aluminium chloride, as when mixed with sweat, it can lead to underarm irritation.

Cut down on the caffeine

Your daily cup of joe may be contributing to your excessive sweating. Caffeine can affect the nerves around the blood vessels and activate sweating. [2]

Avoid baking soda

The internet often recommends applying baking soda as an easy and cheaper alternative, but this should be used with caution. Excessive usage can cause irritation, disrupt the skin barrier and cause burns under your arms.

Keep the area fresh

To prevent irritant contact dermatitis, a skin condition that can be caused by excessive sweat, it is important to keep your underarms clean as much as possible.

JetPro Needleless Underarm Treatment

If you’ve tried these methods and you can’t seem to get out of the house worry- and sweat-free, there may be some alternative solutions that could help you. Fortunately, we’re at the advent of technology where there are non-invasive and pain-free ways to manage excessive sweating, like the JetPro Needleless Underarm Treatment.

JetPro Technology

This effective treatment utilises JetPro’s jet propulsion technology to transdermally administer a nutrient-rich serum deep into the dermis. At high pressure, it doesn’t cause any skin breakage and the treatment is carried out comfortably and painlessly.

The Sweatless Serum

The Sweatless Serum is comprised of a combination of peptides and vegetal extracts that work together as a targeted solution for excessive sweating. The peptides, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Pentapeptide-18 complement each other in reducing acetylcholine release by up to 40% — the neurotransmitter responsible for activating sweat glands in your body. The other active ingredients help hydrate, repair and have vasoconstriction and anti-inflammatory properties.

For optimal results, 4-5 sessions are recommended.

Hopefully, this article has helped shed some light on how to manage sweaty underarms. Hyperhidrosis issues can definitely be a tricky issue to navigate, especially in Singapore’s hot and humid weather. If you have any questions, feel free to book an appointment and speak with our friendly therapists and for a skin consultation to assess your suitability.

Skincare and how to take care of your skin can be a bottomless pit of knowledge for some. Many may not understand that achieving glowing, glass-like skin is more than just keeping up with the latest Tiktok trends and using a cleanser every night. The truth is, just like weight loss and other subjective matters, there is no one-size-fits-all solution — one would have to understand their own skin type and personal issues.

However, one defining factor to bear in mind is that our body’s physiology affects even our skin - including gender - and that the skin issues faced by men and women are affected by a multitude of hormonal factors. Interpreting the various skin types, hormonal factors and external factors aids in crafting a better skincare routine to target your troubled skin areas more effectively.

Skin Types

Normal Skin

Normal skin usually refers to well-balanced skin. It is neither too oily nor too dry. Normal skin produces balanced sebum production and good circulation. Normal skin also appears as fine pores, good blood circulation, a velvety or smooth complexion, no blemishes and skin that is not prone to sensitivity.

A simple skincare routine of regularly exfoliating and applying Vitamin C to your skin via a serum or moisturiser. This simple combination, along with a hydrating sunscreen, will maintain the natural turnover cycle of the skin, which keeps it looking healthy.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is also identified by the appearance of its flaky or rough texture. Dry skin may also appear dull and can feel tight. This may also cause irritation.

It is also used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum as compared to normal or eudermic skin. Due to the lack of sebum produced and impaired barrier function, there is an increased lack of lipids that are needed to retain moisture. Simultaneously, lipids are needed to build a layer of protection against bacteria, debris or dirt from external factors which come into contact with the skin.

Dry skin is also caused by a lack of natural moisturising factors (NMFs), especially in urea, amino acids and lactic acid which help to bind in water. This also includes epidermal lipids such as ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol which are required for healthy skin barrier functions.

For an extra boost, using a serum with hyaluronic acid before using a moisturiser helps to replenish moisture in the skin. Using cream moisturisers will also help to seal in moisture after the dead skin cells flake away.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is identified by its greasy appearance. Individuals with oily skin may often notice a glossy shine and fairly visible pores. Oily skin is used to describe a skin type with excessive sebum production. An overproduction of sebum is known as seborrhoea and this could make you more prone to experiencing acne breakouts. [1]

Using natural oils such as argan and rosehip oil, will not clog one’s pores and may be quite effective in ensuring that the skin is fully hydrated. Additionally, using a lighter moisturiser that comes in the form of a liquid or gel would maintain the moisture of the skin without making it greasy.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is a mixture of a few skin types. In combination skin, the skin types vary along the T-Zone and cheeks. However, medical research and observations show that the T-Zone is often oily while the cheeks are dry.

Using a lightweight moisturiser does not stress out the skin and may also address the issues of both dry and oily skin. Incorporating products that balance the skin is paramount when it comes to caring for combination skin.

Sensitive Skin

Identifying sensitive skin can be challenging. Often, individuals whose skin reacts adversely to new skincare products or flares up when they consume spicy food, often have sensitive skin.

To avoid experiencing sensitivity or redness, use a moisturiser that contains ingredients that relieve the skin, such as physical sunscreen zinc oxide.

Differences in Skin Concerns (Men vs. Women)

Thickness

Males produce testosterone which determines their typically masculine characteristics and moulds their unique facial structure. Females, on the other hand, produce more oestrogen and progesterone hormones.

According to medical research, men have about 20% thicker skin than female skin. [2] As such, the collagen production in men is higher, which gives men a tighter and firmer appearance as compared to women.

For women, collagen production reduces at an irregular rate due to the changes in hormones and the menstrual cycle cause the skin to be affected more drastically, especially after menopause. Female skin tends to thin out more as compared to male skin.

Oiliness

Men tend to have larger and more active sebaceous glands than women. This means that they have more pores than women and are more prone to impurities and acne breakouts. Due to this, the sebum production levels in men may be twice as high as sebum production levels in women. [3]

In terms of appearance, men would have oilier and shinier skin than females. Biologically, the pH level in men would be lower than that of female skin. However, adult males are less prone to dry skin than adult females.

Ageing

The natural process of ageing occurs later for men but they may experience more changes erratically once the process starts. For men, they are most affected by sagging skin, puffy eyes and dark eye circles which make them look older and more fatigued.

In comparison, women are more likely to start ageing earlier in life. For women, their collagen production decreases and they are more likely to get wrinkles as compared to men.

Shaving

While shaving is an external factor that not every individual practices in their daily skincare routine, shaving removes dead or flaking skin cells. This leaves the shaven areas exposed to impurities found in the air as well as other debris and may cause irritation or redness as the uppermost layer of skin loses moisture and protection. Daily shaving stresses the skin and makes it more sensitive and reacts faster to impurities.

Up to 40% of men have shaving-related skin problems where younger men and men who have fairer skin are more prone than others. [3]

Hydration

Although there are great differences between female and male skincare needs, there are also a few things our skin needs in common. For example, across the board, we all need proper hydration and a clean face. This is why our daily routine usually includes moisturiser and cleanser that suits your skin type.

For an added hydration boost, you could consider OxyREPLENISH facial — a targeted treatment that nourishes the skin with oxygen for an immediate hydration effect. This helps improve the quality of your skin’s structure and the natural production of hyaluronic acid, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Summary

We hope this has helped provide a clearer understanding of how important it is to tailor your skincare routine to your individual needs. What works for some online may not work for others — so it helps to “listen” to your body and how it reacts to certain things you do, eat, or even apply on your face.

We’ve all experienced the occasional itch here and there — but what happens when it becomes a regular occurrence? With an unbearable itch, you may scratch the area till it becomes red, inflamed or bloody. Certain skin conditions may even cause the affected area to spread and could cause discomfort and negatively affect your quality of life. When treating skin conditions, it’s important to first identify the skin condition you have in order to find an effective treatment solution.

What’s the difference between Eczema and Psoriasis?

Both eczema and psoriasis can appear as red, rash-like patches on the skin. Both these skin conditions are not contagious, but they also have no known cure. Fortunately, there are ways to manage them and keep the symptoms in check. It may also be good to note that these skin conditions are not the same and have their own triggers.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, can cause swelling, dryness, rashes and itching. Sometimes, the itching may be so severe that you can scratch enough to cause skin bleeding, which could lead to infections if not treated properly. [1] Researchers surveyed 681 people in Singapore and found that 21% of children and 11% of adults have eczema. [2]

Psoriasis, on the other hand, happens when a person’s immune system triggers skin cells to grow faster than they usually should. As such, dead skin cells then build up on the skin instead of coming off. This skin condition may also cause itching, but you may also feel a sting or burn. [3]

Triggers

Eczema can result from irritation of the skin from soaps or detergents. However, it can also be triggered by dust, animal dander, pollen and certain foods. Stress and weather may also play a part.

Psoriasis can also be triggered by stress and weather. Flare-ups can occur with certain medication or sunburns.

Signs and symptoms

Eczema appears as red, dry patches of skin that can be unbearably itchy. You may scratch the affected area a lot, which can lead to bleeding and thick, leathery skin.

It can affect any part of the skin, but some areas are more common. For example, it usually happens on the cheeks, elbows and knees in infants. For adults and older children, it usually affected the insides of their elbows, behind the knees, hands and wrists. Eczema is often associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis (or hay fever).

The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. It appears as thick, raised, red patches on the skin that are covered with white scales made of old, dead skin cells due to the buildup. It can be itchy, painful and can crack and bleed. [4]

It can affect any part of the skin as well, but it usually appears on the knees, elbows, scalp and lower back. Other less common types of this skin condition can occur on the genitals or skin folds like your armpits, known as inverse psoriasis. It can also involve just your hands and feet, known as palmoplantar psoriasis.

When suffering from psoriasis, it can lead to nail changes for some individuals that include:

  • Small pits or holes in the nail
  • Yellow or brown nail colour
  • Thickening of the nail
  • Changes to nail shape
Treatment options

As mentioned earlier, none of these conditions can be cured indefinitely. They can, however, be managed to prevent flare-ups and minimise symptoms. Some of these treatments are:

  • Topical relief: There are many products like steroids like hydrocortisone that can help relieve symptoms and prevent further infection. Other options can be products that contain menthol or calamine to help soothe itchy skin.
  • Traditional oral treatments: The physician can help treat your condition with immunosuppressants or antihistamines to help lower the body’s immune activity and reduce inflammation.
  • Light therapy or phototherapy:  This old treatment uses UV light for both skin conditions.
  • Biologics: A newer form of treatment, it targets a specific molecule involved in each disease and is often given as shots to treat the skin condition.

On top of these options, it’s important to avoid triggers that can worsen the skin condition. For example, avoiding harsh soaps and highly fragranced products and avoiding long, hot baths. You can help your skin condition by moisturising regularly and even investing in a humidifier if your environment is very dry.

More than one solution to treatment

A treatment from Germany, LDM Tech Skin Rejuvenation is a non-invasive technology that treats skin problems in the dermis and epidermis using ultrasonic energy at significantly higher frequencies to create a micro-massage effect on tissue structures.

This activates fibroblasts that improve skin structure, increases tissue elasticity, as well as tightens connective skin tissues. Most importantly, it enhances collagen cross-linking and improves pH changes in the skin. It also helps strengthen the skin and build skin immunity using Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs), which help the skin combat stressful conditions like UV exposure. The skin’s immunity barrier is further reinforced by increasing its moisture content and accelerating its metabolism.

This allows LDM Tech to effectively treat dermatological conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, among others, without causing further irritation to the skin, and promoting quicker healing.

Usually, depending on the severity of your skin condition, you may see visible improvements within the first session. LDM treatment can be done twice a week for 4-6 weeks for the best results.

Although eczema and psoriasis are skin conditions that come off and on, and do not have a definite cure, they can be properly managed to minimise symptoms. Hopefully, this article has helped you better understand the differences between psoriasis and eczema. If in doubt, always consult your doctor to properly diagnose your condition and to get appropriate treatment.

One of the most common aesthetic end goals is youthful, healthy skin — and rightly so. It is, after all, the largest part of our body and a highly protective organ. That said, our skin is exposed to daily stressors such as ultraviolet rays from the sun and could affect skin health.

Fret not! Because sun damage is reversible. Read on for more facts on other modifiable factors you can work on for healthier skin.

Sun damage is not always visible to the naked eye

Especially in Singapore’s climate, we experience all year round summer sun. Sunlight consists of a spectrum of rays of varying wavelength. The longer the wavelengths, the more likely it can penetrate deeper into the skin and can cause damage that is not visible to the naked eye. In fact, all our UV ray exposure accounts for 80% of our skin’s ageing. [1]

How so? The short-wavelength UV rays will interact with the skin and generate highly reactive free radicals. These excessive free radicals can cause cell damage, which also causes skin ageing and heightens the chances of us developing skin cancer. [2]

This is why it is paramount to apply the right amount of sunscreen daily to protect your skin. SPF30 and above is generally sufficient when applied in the right amount. Otherwise, opting for sunscreen with SPF50 or higher would allow more protection for less amount of sunscreen.

If the sun’s already done some damage to your skin and you find yourself with wrinkles, you could consider a NeoGen Nitro-Plasma treatment. This treatment works by using high energy level to administer plasma directly to targeted treatment areas without affecting the surrounding tissues, effectively treating early signs of ageing such as pigmentation, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. The thermal energy also encourages skin regeneration and allows your skin to replace old damaged collagen and elastin.

Dry skin can be harmful

As it’s not always visible to the naked eye, we tend to have the assumption that our dry skin simply means we have to drink more water — it sloughs off and we move on with our day.

While there is truth to this and occasionally dry skin may not be harmful to you, when not cared for regularly, consistently dry skin may lead to Atopic Dermatitis, also known as eczema. If you’re prone to this condition, excessive dryness can lead to activation of the issue that will cause redness and inflammation. Having regular dry skin can also lead to infections. Dry skin that cracks could mean a compromised skin barrier, allowing bacteria to enter and cause infections.

It helps to have a proper skincare routine and to utilise daily moisturisers and hydrating creams to keep your skin hydrated, especially if your skin is more prone to dryness.

You could also give your skin a quick boost with an OxyReplenish facial. This treatment works by replenishing the skin cells with much-needed oxygen and hydration, leaving your skin supple and smooth. It is also the only treatment capable of generating 95-98% oxygen that is deeply infused into the skin, up to its germinative basal layer.

Exfoliation is necessary

Your skin may have dead skin build-up and clogged pores as a result of environmental stressors such as pollutants or dirt. These should be gently removed by washing your face daily and regular exfoliation. Exfoliation helps to:

  • Clean and purify clogged pores
  • Slough away dead skin cells and encourage new cell turnover
  • Boost circulation
  • Enhance skincare penetration

For proper exfoliation, you could try a variety of home recipes containing sugar and honey or over-the-counter scrubs and chemical peels. For a deep cleanse, you could consider an Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial.

This technology targets the uppermost layer of skin cells and uses gentle water jet streams and extremely fine aluminium oxide powder to deeply cleanse pores without extraction or damage to the skin.

Stress affects your skin

Chronic stress can have serious consequences on our skin as well. It can manifest itself in dry skin, wrinkles and acne. Stress pimples are caused by the increased production of cortisol when we get stressed. Cortisol, in turn, triggers the production of another hormone called corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates oil release from the sebaceous glands. Too much oil production then leads to clogged pores and acne.

Over-the-counter pimple creams and natural remedies such as tea tree oil may be just what you need for your acne woes. For more severe cases of acne, you could consider the Jet Pulse Plus+ facial that helps to:

  • Remove blackheads
  • Tighten pores
  • Control acne and sebum
  • Clear oily and congested skin

Bad skin may be a sign of underlying health issues

While most skin issues resolve within a month or two, recurring bad skin may indicate an underlying health issue. Your skin is your largest organ and changes in the skin such as discolouration or a new growth could be an early sign of a more serious problem.

For example, rosacea is a chronic skin disease that goes through a cycle of fading and relapse. It is usually due to triggers like alcoholic beverages, spicy foods and intestinal bacteria Helicobacter Pylori, and usually triggered by consumption of foods that do not agree with the body. On the other hand, bronzing of the skin could indicate an issue with iron metabolism while yellowing could signal liver failure.

Hopefully, these facts helped you learn a little more about your skin and how to give it the love it deserves. Try to adopt a daily ritual that fortifies your skin. If it’s damaged, there are always methods that help rebuild your skin barrier. Lastly, always remember that your skin is still an organ and it can carry clues on your general health. When in doubt, book a consultation for a proper skin analysis in order to find a treatment plan best suited for you.

The end goal of an amazing facial is usually smooth, dewy skin. The cosmetic industry has come up with it all — from creams to chemical peels. Social media’s newest obsession is #dermaplaning and is said to exfoliate skin and get rid of peach fuzz. What exactly is it and how does it work?

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a quick procedure where a dermatologist or aesthetic doctor uses a surgical blade held at a 45-degree angle to skim dead skin off your face. Much like other forms of exfoliation, it removes the outermost layer of your skin, unclogs pores and helps your skin glow. In the process, the tiny facial hairs on your skin are removed as well.

It is safe for most people, with little risk of side effects when performed properly. It does not require any downtime for recovery and results typically last three weeks.

The idea is simple: as your skin is exposed daily to harsh environmental aspects like toxins and sun damage, dermaplaning can help clear the damaged skin cells to let the newer skin cells come through. This can be done as a standalone treatment or as part of a facial.

You may notice your skin look immediately brighter, but it often takes a few days before you see the full results. The results, however, are not permanent and will fade after about three weeks. Take note that with dermaplaning, it is important to be careful about sun exposure that can reverse the effects or create blotches on your skin. Sunscreen is essential!

Are there any side effects to Dermaplaning?

Generally, dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure that may cause slight redness in your face after treatment. Although rare, it might irritate your skin or cause infection if done incorrectly or if the blade used is not sterile.

Another important thing to note is that dermaplaning should be avoided if you suffer from acne, sunburn, or other inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis because dermaplaning will exacerbate these issues and further irritate your skin.

If you do have acne and would like to avoid chemical peels, Microdermabrasion might be a good alternative to consider.

What is the difference between Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning?

Microdermabrasion is also a minimally invasive procedure that helps exfoliate dead skin to improve skin tone and texture. The difference lies in the method and technology, where instead of using a blade, fine particles are used to create a mildly abrasive surface for exfoliation.

These can be done with: [1]

  • A diamond-tipped handpiece — This handpiece removes dead skin while performing a suction function to clean them off immediately. This is good for more sensitive parts of the face, such as the eyes.
  • Crystal microdermabrasion — This form of microdermabrasion uses fine crystal particles to exfoliate the skin. This also has a suction function to clean the dead skin off immediately.

Although severe side effects are rare, the suction process may cause mild bruising. Sensitive skin may also experience dermatitis or allergic reactions.

Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial

Taking on the same idea as a traditional Microdermabrasion but with a softer approach, the Aquajet Microdermabrasion facial is a 3-step Korean therapy that helps renew and smoothen skin, while providing it with nutrients for a healthy glow. It replaces the rough crystals from normal microdermabrasion with a much gentler jet water stream and extremely fine aluminium oxide powder.

By delivering a combination of highly potent skin solution coupled with the revolutionary VORTEX technology, Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial effectively deep cleanses pores without extraction or damage to the skin. The gentle vacuum activation brings the sebaceous glands closer to the surface of the skin and applies sufficient pressure that ejects the sebaceous contents like dead skin, dirt and oil, and cleans them off immediately with the water stream.

It can help to:

What are some of the side effects?

Under an experienced therapist, you should experience no side effects, other than slight redness that goes away in 5 to 10 minutes. It would be recommended to keep the skin hydrated and protected from the sun with moisturiser and sunscreen.

That being said, there is no downtime to this treatment and you can return to your daily activities right after.

Patients are recommended to come back once a month for longer-lasting results. Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, this treatment is gentler on your skin with the similar benefits of radiance and glow. If you’re unsure of whether this treatment is suitable for you, book a consultation for a proper diagnosis and a more targeted treatment plan that would best suit you and your skin concerns.

Before and after melasma

On the surface, the terms Hyperpigmentation and Melasma are interchangeably used — however, these skin conditions are different and are often confused with each other because of their similarities in appearance and symptoms. In fact, Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation.

If you suffer from this skin condition or the like, it may be good to understand how they differ and their causes, so that you can find the right treatment for your skin and, hopefully, reverse their effects.

Hyperpigmentation

According to medical studies and expert observations, hyperpigmentation has been generally observed to be the darkening of areas of the skin. Hyperpigmentation often stems from acne and you may also develop it even after your acne breakout or pimples heal. The discolouration of your skin may be temporary but it can also be near-permanent.

Pigmentation affects the natural colour of your skin. Our skin appears in the natural colour that we are born with from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in our skin are in charge of melanin production. When these skin cells become unhealthy or damaged, melanin production is affected. [1]

Pigmentation usually appears as a dark patch and this has been medically classified as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  Nonetheless, there are no harmful side effects. They may appear as birthmarks, freckles and liver spots. It is usually tan, brown or dark brown in colour. These dark spots may darken with increased sun exposure, especially without sunscreen.

Home Remedies for Hyperpigmentation

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been deemed as one of the most important products in any skincare routine. It’s packed with antioxidants and ingredients that even out skin tone. It also reduces the appearance of scarring by encouraging collagen production. A 2019 scientific report found that Vitamin C at levels from 3 to 10% are one of the quickest long-term solutions for managing hyperpigmentation. [2]

Vitamin C can be applied mostly through serums. It is also included in some brightening creams and sunscreens. Ideally, it should be applied once daily after cleansing and moisturising.

Retinoids

Retinoids are also known as Vitamin A and they are just as powerful (if not, more) as Vitamin C. Mainly used to treat signs of ageing, they also double up as solutions to treat acne and hyperpigmentation.

A 2016 study which took place for 24 weeks learnt that 4% hydroquinone and 1% retinol treatment significantly improved photodamage and melasma, which are 2 types of hyperpigmentation, in participants. [3]

Retinol products of up to 2% can be purchased over the counter at most pharmacies. However, you should consult a dermatologist if you would like to use retinol products of a higher concentration.

For retinol to work without any harmful side effects, incorporate it once or twice weekly into your skincare routine.

Glycolic Acid

Known as the most popular and strongest AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), the sugar cane derived glycolic acid exfoliates and thickens skin as well as prevents acne and fades dark spots. It also adds another strong barrier in the skin layers which enable the skin to be thickened. Though found mostly in professional chemical peels, it is also an active ingredient in many face washes, moisturisers and serums.

Most products usually contain about 8-30% of glycolic acid. While some may find this concentration mild, it is not typically recommended to use more than 30% once or twice a week to avoid irritation or harmful side effects.

Similar to the application of retinol, it is vital to apply glycolic acid gradually by working your way upwards. Regardless of skin type, glycolic acid is guaranteed to make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Melasma

Melasma has been identified as a sub-category of hyperpigmentation. Due to one of the main causes of Melasma being hormonal changes, treating it can be much more challenging as compared to other hyperpigmentation issues. This is due to difficulties in altering the body’s hormonal composition.

This chronic pigmentary skin disorder mostly affects women of Southeast Asian descent as well as patients living close to the equator. Melasma is also known as chloasma.

Physically, melasma presents itself as a mild and faint discolouration of the face before it darkens. Melasma patches may vary in size and distribution. Usually, they tend to develop at a gradual pace depending on the person.

For patients who are pregnant, these patches may gradually disappear a few months after pregnancy. However, this does not always happen. Patients whose melasma patches are not disappearing may want to consider undergoing treatment to remove the patches.

According to experts, the pathology of melasma is complex due to its combination of both extrinsic and intrinsic factors with the inclusion of genetic susceptibility. Studies have shown that excessive UV damage and exposure may aggravate the condition and cause further harm. [4] Melasma may also complicate the process of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is caused by damage to the skin such as chemical peels or allergic reactions to certain facial creams.

Studies have also shown that melasma disproportionately affects more women who have darker skin, higher oestrogen sensitivity or are facing excessive stress. While this fact is not one hundred percent verified, melasma may also be caused by the overstimulation of melanocytes when the skin is under heavy exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun, which is especially common in tropical countries such as Singapore.

The most at risk of developing melasma are:

  • Pregnant women in their second or third trimesters
  • Women who are undergoing hormone therapy
  • Women who take birth control pills, and
  • Women who use skincare products that are not gentle to the skin

The condition may appear to be more insidious than others and is also sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy” due to it being a common occurrence among pregnant women. Despite this, women who are not pregnant and men may also develop melasma.

There are three different types of Melasma:

  • Epidermal Melasma – Excess pigmentation is isolated within the epidermis. Dark patches appear brown with well-defined borders
  • Dermal Melasma – Excess pigment found deeper within the dermis. It appears in blue-grey patches
  • Mixed Melasma – Brown-gray pigmentation affecting both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin.

Home Remedies for Melasma

  1. Using safe skincare products and cosmetics

Even with the perfect skincare routine, it may not be sufficient to get rid of melasma patches. One way to fix this is by using only safe skincare products which do not include harsh chemicals or ingredients that easily dry out or burn your skin. Certain cosmetics may include compounds that are inherently harmful to us in the long run. It is also a common mistake made by most individuals to use skin lightening products in hopes of lightening the melasma patches. Most medical professionals warn against using such skin lightening products as they are mostly ineffective and may lead to oral and kidney complications. Most of these skin lightening products may also not be FDA approved.

  1. Incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine

Individuals with melasma may notice that their condition may worsen after being exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Melasma pigments tend to flare up due to the combinatorial effect of ultraviolet (UV) rays, light and heat being able to accelerate the development of pigmentations.

  1. Topical treatments

Working with topical treatments is one of the easiest treatment methods for most individuals as most of these products can be purchased over-the-counter. Combining the use of various creams and medications may reduce the intensity of the dark spots and each medication may potentially maximise each other’s skincare purpose.

Hydroquinone is one of the more popular skincare options and may be combined with other medications such as tretinoin and steroids. The combination of these topical treatments helps to inhibit melanocytes from overproducing melanin. Other solutions such as oral tranexamic acid may also be used to inhibit melanin production. However, this needs to be prescribed by a medical professional.

  1. Chemical peels

Professional chemical peels are highly effective due to the combination of several chemical compounds which are used to make the surface layer of the skin blister. Eventually, the chemical peel peels off to reveal a new and more supple layer underneath the skin.

Sylfirm

At Cambridge Therapeutics, we offer a wide variety of treatments for various skin concerns. Sylfirm is a revolutionary technology developed in Silicon Valley, treats melasma, redness, fine lines, brightens skin tones, tightening pores, acne scars and skin rejuvenation.

Sylfirm utilises repeated ultra-short pulses (RP) which react only to abnormal blood vessels and tissue membranes. Tiny electrodes generate a powerful electromagnetic field of energy that safely and effectively penetrates the dermal layer. SMART technology selectively treats abnormal skin vessels such as Melasma improved skin tone, clearer and more radiant-looking skin.

Unlike other laser treatments, Sylfirm is safe on tanned and darker skin tones as it targets the dermis and minimises thermo stimulation on the epidermis.

Benefits of Sylfirm

  • Short treatment time (treatment takes about 10 mins)
  • Virtually pain-free
  • Clinically proven results
  • Safe for all skin types
  • No downtime

Treatment Procedure

Patients who have undergone or are undergoing the Sylfirm treatment have reported that they experience little to no pain. However, this also depends on external factors such as the patient’s melasma condition.

Results can be observed post-treatment after a single session. For better results, a program of 5 or more planned sessions may be suggested. This, however, depends on the patient’s needs. It is important to communicate both your needs and desires with your doctor, so that they may craft a treatment that best suits you.

For many individuals, acne is an issue that we commonly face as part of growing up; a rite of passage as we undergo puberty and the hormonal changes that come with it. Unfortunately, for some, acne follows us well into adulthood.

Although acne mainly affects adolescents, it also happens in children and adults. One study found some degree of facial acne in 54% of women and 40% of men older than 25 years. [1]

Having acne-ridden skin can definitely be a cause for frustration and could greatly affect our confidence and self-esteem. It is an ongoing battle — to treat the blemishes on our faces and to prevent them from recurring as well.

What is acne?

When your skin follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, it can cause whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. As more of these follicles become clogged, it leads to Acne. It is most common amongst teenagers but will affect people of all ages. It can be a persistent problem due to the regeneration of your skin and the external stressors of the environment.

As these bumps and pimples may take time to heal, it leads to a cycle of pimples that crop up when some have healed. Depending on the severity, this can lead to emotional distress and scars on the skin.

What are the types of acne?

There are six main types of acne: [2]

Whiteheads and blackheads are non-inflammatory, which means they are usually easier to treat with simple home remedies or over-the-counter medication. The other four, however, are types of inflammatory acne that are harder to treat.

  1. Whiteheads

Also known as white comedones, whiteheads happen when pores are completely clogged with oil, bacteria or skin cell production.

  1. Blackheads

Blackheads, on the other hand, are called open comedones because the head of the pore remains open while the rest of the pore is clogged.

  1. Papules

These are hard, clogged pores that are tender to the touch. They form when oil and excess skin cells mix with the bacteria on your skin. The surrounded tissue around the pore usually gets infected, creating an inflamed lesion.

  1. Pustules

Unlike papules, pustules contain pus. These bumps are raised above the skin with a white centre.

  1. Nodules

A more serious form of acne, nodules are bumps that can be found deep under the skin’s surface. They are usually a result of untreated acne that led to bacterial infection within the pore.

  1. Cysts

Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne and also occurs because of an infection within the skin. They are usually inflamed, painful and filled with pus. They have a tendency to burst and infect surrounding tissues.

What causes acne?

Acne typically appears on your face, chest, upper back and shoulders as these areas have the most oil (or sebaceous) glands. These follicles are connected to oil glands. The main factors of acne are usually:

  • Excess oil production
  • Clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation

Certain aspects may trigger or worsen acne and can range from hormonal changes, medications, diet or stress.

Home remedies and over-the-counter acne treatments

While it is advisable to seek treatment, you can turn to certain home remedies or over-the-counter acne solutions if they are generally mild and can be fixed along with a proper skin cleansing routine you can stick to. Some of these are:

  1. Invest in a cleanser that has antibacterial properties like benzoyl peroxide. They can come in the form of gels, creams and lotions applied to the affected area. It can help in killing the bacteria on the surface of your skin.
  2. Exfoliate your skin by choosing products that contain salicylic acid. It can help in removing the impurities on your skin surface and open pores.
  3. Spot treatment with tea-tree oil. Known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties, it is an easy and effective spot treatment to help with your pimples.

Although these are solutions that you may consider when attempting to solve your acne woes, you should also consider other forms of treatments that can help in quickening the process.

Other alternative acne treatments available

There are various home remedies for acne, but not all of them are backed by research. If the aforementioned remedies do not seem to work for you, fret not! You do not have to deal with this issue alone. Here are some acne treatments you can consider that effectively help deal with your acne woes:

#1: LDM-Tech

LDM (Local Dynamic Micromassage) Tech uses ultrasonic energy at a significantly higher frequency, creating a strong micro massaging effect that activates protein structures on the skin. This enhances collagen production, improves skin pH levels and reduces skin laxity, tightening skin.

In skin conditions like Acne, Eczema and Dermatitis, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) appear to be involved. As such, LDM inhibits the action of these proteins to reduce its damaging effects on the skin tissues. The further activation of heat shock proteins helps improve skin immunity and improve skin tone and texture.

It is non-invasive and you will not experience any form of pain. With quick, visible results, this is suitable for all skin types and can be used in combination with other treatments.

#2: JetPulse Plus+ Facial

At Cambridge Therapeutics, we believe in the “no manual extraction” policy. Instead, we achieve acne-free, brighter and radiant skin with the JetPulse Plus. It is exclusively formulated for Cambridge and tailored to Asian Skin types with Photo-Pneumatic therapy. It helps with blackheads, reduces enlarged pores, controls acne and clears oily congested skin.

It is gentle for the skin, with little to no pain. Results are visible immediately and clients can resume their normal routine immediately.

Acne treatment NeoGen Plasma

#3: NeoGen Plasma

A revolutionary Plasma technology skin regeneration treatment, the NeoGen Plasma treatment uses plasma energy to regenerate and heal the skin. This treatment is exceptionally recommended for those who are sensitive to laser-based treatments.

The NeoGen Plasma even helps with severely inflamed adult acne, promoting strong skin regeneration and suppressing sebum secretion. Among other benefits, it also has a strong anti-bacterial effect that kills bacteria and inhibits their growth, making it highly effective for inflamed acne.

Regardless of the treatment that you decide to take on, it is important to remember that these skin problems are not permanent and can be solved. Ultimately, it is dependent on the type and severity of acne you have, as well as your skin type and level of comfort. If in doubt, reach out to our friendly team for a consultation and who can better educate and curate the best treatment options for your skin.

Who doesn’t love youthful, glowing skin that glistens when the light hits?  If you’re obsessed with sheet masks, essences and even googled the word “chok-chok skin”, you’ve definitely heard about the latest trend of achieving the perfect “glass skin”. Glass skin is a phrase that originated from the K-beauty scene that went viral and took over social media by storm.

Used to describe a skin complexion so luminous, exceptionally smooth and even-toned, Glass skin is so flawless it has the appearance of glass. It aims for healthy skin that gives off a youthful glow from within. In order to achieve it, your skin needs to be taken care of in all aspects — internally and externally. You’ll need to have a healthy, balanced lifestyle and a dedicated skincare routine.

Contrary to popular belief, getting glass skin isn’t just about slapping on copious amounts of moisturiser and dewy foundation. Read on for tips on what you can add to your skincare routine to get glass skin and 3 quick lunchtime procedures that will give your skin that extra oomph for a youthful, inner glow.

Moisturising isn’t enough

The key to Glass skin lies in healthy skin, and that also means having a thorough nightly routine with proper cleansing and serums. Although it is advised to follow through with all the steps, it should be tailored to your skin type and how it responds to various products.

Double cleanse

Double cleansing is the crucial foundation to kickstart your skincare routine. For the products to be absorbed well, you must have a clean canvas! Whether it’s day or night, your face would have collected dirt, grease and sometimes makeup residue. Start with cleansing oil, balm or micellar water and follow through with a cleanser of your choice. [1]

Toner

In K-beauty, toners serve the purpose of restoring the skin’s pH levels and also provide base hydration for better absorption of the products. To achieve the glass skin, you’ll need to use the 7 Skin Method and apply seven layers of toner to your skin.

Serum or Essence

Once you’re done with the toner, you can seal the deal with a serum or essence. From tackling problems like hydration to pigmentation to ones containing popular ingredients like hyaluronic acid, fatty acids, peptides and more, take your pick on what you’re looking to target for the day! Massage it in circular motions and work your way up from your neck to your forehead.

Moisturiser

Like all skincare routines, moisturiser is something we’re all familiar with. Reach for one that is lightweight and packs moisture to better achieve hydration for your skin.

Eye Cream

Your eye area is often more delicate and tends to be drier than the rest of your face, so an eye cream or serum can help combat that! Apply it at night right before you head to bed to maximize its benefits.

Mask

On top of all of these steps, the last step would be to use a moisturising mask to give your skin an extra boost. Choose from sheet masks, to even sleeping masks that can help with your skin while you sleep. They might be even more effective as they play off the cellular regeneration that happens while your body is at rest.

If you’ve tried these steps but they don’t seem to be effective in achieving your aesthetic goals, you can consider turning to some non-invasive treatments to maintain that glowing, beautiful skin.

Needleless Rejuran

With frequent exposure to UV rays that can lead to skin deterioration and a decrease in collagen production, your skin will start ageing faster than you think. [2] With Rejuran, it counters the effects of ageing by healing the skin from the inside out. A skin-healing treatment that has been increasing in popularity in South Korea and Singapore, it can reduce signs of ageing and leave the skin more hydrated and refreshed by reactivating the skin’s healing ability to restore collagen structure.

It is delivered deep into the dermis without harming the surrounding skin cells and tissues via a non-invasive method. Some of the benefits include:

  • Brightening up skin tone
  • Elastin and collagen growth
  • Hydrates skin
  • Lightening hyperpigmentation
  • Improves acne-prone skin
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Triggering cell renewal
  • No downtime
  • No pain and no needles required
  • Visible results

With the Rejuran Booster, there are 6 key ingredients used that help with your skin:

c-PDRN

Powerful and natural skin-healing ingredient for cell growth and tissue regeneration. It increases the metabolic activity of fibroblasts and acts as a scaffolding for cells and cellular matrices to grow.

Hyaluronic Acid

This ingredient functions to retain water for your skin to be hydrated and plump, and helps with reducing free radicals that result in skin ageing.

Panthenol

A superb skin softener known for its moisturising and soothing properties.

Vitamin C

A key ingredient to the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, it is also a powerful antioxidant that can help in improving wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

GSH Antioxidant

This consists of a Tripeptide of 3 Amino Acids (Glycine, Glutamic Acid and Cysteine). It regulates collagen production, brightens skin, lightens hyperpigmentation and inhibits melanin production.

Anti-Pigmentation Agent

A skin softener is known for its moisturising and soothing properties, it can inhibit melanogenesis by activating the autophagy system mediating a decrease in melanin synthesis.

To administer Rejuran, it uses the JetPRO — an advanced skincare technology that creates high-pressure, fine liquid jet streams to the skin at subsonic speed. These streams place a gentle yet powerful pressure to the skin surface to exfoliate the skin and prepare it for the transdermal delivery of the Rejuran.

Where can Rejuran be used?

Rejuran is best used for the eye area, cheeks, jawline and lip area. There is little to no downtime after the treatment and patients can resume their daily routine immediately. Occasionally, some patients may experience redness and slight swelling in treated areas which usually resolves after a couple of hours.

Oxyreplenish Facial

The OxyREPLENISH Facial uses the ONLY system that is capable of generating up to 98% of pure oxygen. It is the only therapy that infuses oxygen that is capable of reaching the germinative basal layer of the skin.

This deep infusion of oxygen is far more superior than regular Oxygen Sprays that have a relatively superficial effect on the epidermis. For this treatment, it refills skin cells with the oxygen and hydration it requires. It also plumps up dehydrated cells and smoothens fine lines or wrinkles.

Pure Oxygen is infused at high pressure deep into the dermis level of the skin, replenishing cells with oxygen and nourishing cells with skin regeneration factors like peptides. It gives immediate hydration on the skin and has tons of benefits like skin renewal, clarity and intense moisture.

With this treatment, you’ll see visible results in just one session and feel absolutely refreshed and renewed with soft and supple skin.

Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial

Another non-invasive skin treatment, Microdermabrasion facials exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin — clearing out dead skin cells and refreshing skin tone and texture. Unlike traditional microdermabrasion that involves abrasive, crystal-like material to sand out the outer layer of the skin, this new technique is gentler on the skin.

It involves spraying a stream of fine aluminium oxide or sodium bicarbonate particles to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells, smoothen the skin and provide hydration and nutrients.

The Aquajet Facial tool is also unique as it uses radial tips. It allows for rapid diffusion of the solution into the skin. The ergonomic design of the head enables an even solution distribution. It has the benefits of:

  • Reducing acne and acne scarring
  • Smoother skin complexion and texture
  • Skin tightening
  • Increasing skin radiance
  • Tighter and less visible pores

Does the procedure have any downtime?

This treatment is painless and no topical numbing creams need to be used. Your skin may feel slightly sore and would have slight redness which would go away shortly. There is no downtime and patients can return to their daily activities immediately after.

Whether it’s adopting a new skincare routine or trying out some of these non-invasive treatments, we hope we’ve provided you with enough options to achieve the skin complexion of your dreams. When trying out a treatment, bear in mind that it should be safe and that your concerns are communicated to your doctor.

When in doubt, you should always book a consultation where the team can curate the best treatment plan for you.

2020 was a challenging year with the pandemic, and we could all use a skincare refresh and glow up in 2021. A few months into the new year and we’re finally allowed to head out and aesthetic services are back in. With advancements in technology, we can look to other options that can complement our daily home beauty regimes to achieve our aesthetic goals.

What are some of the medical aesthetic trends of 2021?

For the Face

Due to the pandemic, we’ve been constantly wearing masks, and the importance of taking care of our face has become more apparent. From your eyes to your lips, you’re spoilt for choice with a variety of treatments that will give you the glow up you’ve always desired - you’ll look reinvigorated and no one will know you’ve been on Zoom all day.

Focus on the eyes

As the saying goes, “the eyes are the windows to the soul”, and this rings even truer with half our face covered most of the time. There has been an increasing trend of focusing on aspects around the upper face, especially areas around the eyes.

Doctors predict patients will look at optimising procedures around the eye area for natural-looking and permanent results. For example, non-surgical enhancements like eyebrow lifting can help lighten and brighten the area around the eyes. Optimising your eye area can make you look brighter and better rested.

Getting the perfect pout

Although our lips are pretty much hidden for most of the day, lip-focused procedures are still very much in demand. With the release of hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers and more, people continue to yearn for the perfect, plump yet natural-looking lips. Always communicate your desires and concerns with your aesthetic doctor so they can deliver a lip augmentation that best suits your face and personality.

Goodbye Maskne

The biggest downside of having to constantly wear masks is the dreaded maskne. Conversations of acne have hit an all-time high because of the oil and sweat that our masks tend to harbour. That, plus the Singapore heat and humidity creates the perfect recipe for worsening skin issues that already exist or cause new ones.

Give your skin some extra loving with JetPro treatments. These clinically proven treatments are non-invasive, painless and needless. They also help with a variety of skincare woes, from rosacea & sensitive skin to acne. Your face will be acne-free and glowing in no time.

The JetPro cultivates the use of advanced jet propulsion technology and works at subsonic speed to generate high-pressure, fine liquid jet stress applied to the skin using the patented JetPro handpiece. It is used through Cambridge Therapeutics’s 8 different cocktails for different skin concerns:

  • Rejuran Booster
  • ATX-NAT
  • Anti-Ageing Complex 1 and 2
  • Pigmentation and Melasma Treatment
  • Rosacea and Sensitive Skin
  • Acne
  • Sweatless

To find the right treatment for you, check in with one of our consultants who will advise you on what suits you best after a skin analysis.

For the Body

The pandemic also had us staying indoors more often, which led to us inadvertently packing on some pounds. Now that we’re allowed out again, people have started focusing on their body. Other than hitting the gym and going on diets, it gave rise to popularity in body enhancement procedures.

Body slimming

New body contouring procedures with little downtime have been increasing in popularity, and will not be going away anytime soon. For example, RF Slimming (Radiofrequency slimming treatment), which utilises radiofrequency to promote slimming by producing heat safely while penetrating deeper into the skin to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These radiofrequency treatments promote effective slimming and tightening without the risk of permanent skin discolouration, making it an extremely safe option.

One example is the Onda Coolwaves, which is a type of RF Slimming treatment that can help you achieve your desired body safely and effectively. Aptly named, the Coolwaves refer to special microwaves that selectively target fat cells while, at the same time, a cooling system cools parts of the skin to counteract the heat emitted through the microwaves. This provides a more comfortable and safer procedure.

Getting rid of stretch marks

Sometimes we get our desired body size too rapidly, and this comes at the cost of stretching skin. Other reasons for stretch marks could be puberty, pregnancy, intense weight training or rapid growth in muscles. Having stretch marks can be frustrating and difficult to get rid of.

The Stretch Mark Buster Combo, LDM + Neogen Plasma treatment employs thermal energy to stimulate collagen and elastin remodelling. LDM activates fibroblasts to improve skin elasticity and remodel connective skin tissues. This dual treatment makes it highly effective in removing stubborn stretch marks.

For your feminine health

Venus Fiore

Commonly a taboo topic amongst females, feminine health is an aspect that is crucial to a woman's overall health. Up to 45% of postmenopausal women experience vaginal atrophy where dryness, discomfort, difficulty with sex and urination greatly decreases their quality of life. [1]

In fact, 38% of women experience vaginal laxity that impacts their satisfaction with their sexual lives. [2] The three main concerns when it comes to feminine health are the external appearance of the vagina, postmenopausal and childbirth vaginal laxity and vaginal atrophy. In order to help with that, one can consider vaginal tightening to help with issues like overall vaginal discomfort and urinary incontinence.

With these concerns towards feminine health heavily in mind, the Venus Fiore from Venus Concept can help meet the needs of the female clients. This revolutionary machine allows for three platforms of treatment:

  • Rejuvenation of the vaginal canal
  • Tightening of the Labia
  • Reduction of the mon pubis

How does it work?

By combining Multi-polar Radiofrequency (RF) and Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF), it aims to encourage the growth of new collagen and elastin fibres to help regenerate firm and healthy tissues while increasing the rate of healing and improving blood circulation.

The RF uses a safe and controlled heating method where heat can be distributed deeper into the tissues for collagen remodelling and synthesis. It is not absorbed by melanin, a pigment in the skin and is safe for all skin types. The PMEF is a non-thermal mechanism that functions to induce the release of fibroblast growth factors that will trigger the synthesis of collagen and the formation of new blood vessels for tissue regeneration.

The three applicators are fitted with single-use, disposable tips to ensure safety and hygiene during the procedure. It can fix the following problems:

Mon Pubis (or Pubis Area), deposition of fatty tissue above the pubic bone

Postmenopausal women or women who have recently given birth may notice a sudden increase in the size of the mon pubis due to the result of increased fatty deposits. This may lead them to feel self-conscious and uncomfortable in tight-fitting clothing. As such, the applicator uses RF to heat the fat pads without damaging the surrounding skin cells. It will lead to cell death of the fat cells, which will help in the issue.

Labia Tightening

As a result of age or pregnancy, collagen and elastin fibres experience wear and tear that will lead to decreased elasticity of the skin. It can give the labia a flared and sagging appearance that may lead women to feel self-conscious. This treatment uses RF to heat the collagen and elastin fibres. It induces a recovery response that increases the production of collagen and elastin molecules. As such, it will also strengthen the existing collagen fibres and tighten the labia. It can also help with circulation and collagen production.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Many women experience dryness, discomfort and difficulty with sex and urination due to changes in the hormonal balance due to age and pregnancy. This is known as vaginal atrophy and can cause discomfort in day to day life. By safely heating the vaginal canal, it aims to trigger a similar healing response which stimulates collagen growth, tightening the vaginal walls. It also aims to increase neovascularity thereby improving sensations during intimacy and improving moisture levels, thereby providing comfort.

Is there any downtime?

The treatment, which lasts approximately 10 - 15 minutes per area, employs a safe heating method that ensures the treatment is comfortable. It has minimal downtime and patients can go back to their routine immediately after. On occasion, they might experience redness that will resolve within a day.

Hopefully, we’ve provided you with enough options to consider for your new glow up regime. Always remember that safety and efficiency are key in finding proper treatment and that your desires and concerns are met and properly managed. If in doubt, book a consultation with our experienced consultation team and we’ll help you craft a treatment plan best suited to you.

As we increasingly face more stress, grow older and age, it is natural for us to want to seek solutions with longer-lasting results to tackle issues we may no longer be able to solve with at-home treatments.

Home remedies and treatments might be cheaper but in the long run, do not provide you with lasting results. Approaching these treatments, we should look at them not as aesthetic treatments but as nurturing benefits that boost our skin.

Giving the perfect gift for your loved ones can be tough, especially when you’re not sure if the item will go unused. Be it a birthday, anniversary or just an occasion to surprise them, pampering them with an experience such as a facial is a great way to show how much you truly care for them.

An experience like a facial would give them a chance to relax and indulge in some self-care for a few hours.

Why Would Facials Make A Great Gift?

It’s Great For Mental Health

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s always important to take care of your body and mind. A relaxing facial would allow one to de-stress and feel pampered. Stress can affect our overall well-being and choosing to stay away from your phone and the world for 60 minutes can do wonders to your mind and soul!

It’s Sustainable

Instead of buying your loved ones a physical gift that they might not like or chuck into the cupboard, facials would not take up any space in their home. Instead, it allows them to enjoy an experience that would lift their mood and pamper their skin with some much-needed care. Plus, they can plan it during a time well suited for their schedule.

It’s Catered To Their Functional Needs

Our skin is always adapting according to the different aspects of our lives - the environment, our stressors and more. A facial is perfect as a way to perk up one’s skin and to learn how to better take care of it. Your loved one might enjoy the experience so much that they would appreciate setting out time for some self-care in the future.

Besides being a professional outlet for taking care of their skin, there are many benefits when one goes for a facial.

Benefits of Facials [1]

Cleansing Your Skin

In comparison with cleansing your skin at home, skincare professionals can cleanse your skin thoroughly. They would be able to troubleshoot the issues you face and will be able to advise what would work best on your skin to help it glow.

Prevents Ageing With Skin Rejuvenation

Regular facials can boost cell regeneration and promote collagen development - giving you more youthful skin by rejuvenating and tightening it.

Detoxifying The Skin

There are pollutants and contaminants in the environment that can make your skin dull. As such, it’s important to detox it regularly to prevent clogged pores and maintain moisture.

Boost Absorption Capabilities

By going for facials, your skin will be cleansed and smooth. This would allow your skin’s capability to absorb the skincare products you use. On top of that, the make-up products you use can be applied more seamlessly.

Give You A More Even Skin Tone

Ageing, regular exposure to the sun and hormonal changes can lead to melanin production - resulting in dark spots. If you suffer from an uneven complexion, going for the right facial will help even out the skin tone and brighten up dark spots.

Types of Facials

Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial

Microdermabrasion facials are a non-invasive skin treatment that helps with exfoliating the uppermost layer of the skin - clearing dead skin cells, refreshing skin tone and skin texture.

Traditional Microdermabrasion involves an abrasive, crystal-like material to sand the outer layer of skin. With recent advancements, a newer and gentler technique involves spraying a stream of fine aluminium oxide or sodium bicarbonate particles and vacuuming it away to achieve the same effect.

Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial is a 3-step Korean non-invasive treatment that works to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells and smoothen the skin. It also hydrates and provides the skin with important nutrients.

The head of the Aquajet Facial tool is unique as it uses radial tips - these tips allow for rapid diffusion of the solution to permeate the skin. The ergonomic design of the tool enables an even solution distribution.

What are some of the benefits of Aquajet Microdermabrasion Facial?

  • Reduces acne and acne scarring
  • Improves complexion
  • Smoother skin texture
  • Skin tightening
  • Increases skin radiance
  • Tighter and less visible pores

Needleless Rejuran

Rejuran is a skin healing treatment that effectively reduces and heals signs of ageing by leaving the skin smoother, refreshed and more hydrated by reactivating the skin’s healing abilities to restore its own collagen structure.

Needleless Rejuran is a new concept where the product is administered and delivered deep into the dermis without harming the surrounding skin cells and tissues via a non-invasive method.

This clinically-proven procedure provides instant results with a transdermal system to effectively administer Rejuran with no needles, pain or downtime. It will heal, brighten and repair the skin while correcting ageing problems through treatments that are comfortable and relaxing. The Rejuran Booster is administered with the use of the JetPRO.

The JetPRO creates high-pressure, fine liquid jet streams to the skin at subsonic speed. These streams place a gentle yet powerful pressure on the skin surface to exfoliate the skin, preparing it for the transdermal delivery of the Rejuran. Applied perpendicularly, the jet streams then stretch the skin to create microchannels in the dermis to infuse the Rejuran Booster.

It’s suitable for those who are seeking long-lasting skin renewal, restore skin’s balance of oil and moisture, pigmentation and pore issues and a natural alternative to treat lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead.

What are some of the benefits of Needleless Rejuran?

  • Effectively hydrates the skin
  • Lightens hyperpigmentation
  • Improves skin elasticity
  • Improves collagen & elastin scaffolding structure
  • Evens out skin tone
  • Improves acne-prone skin
  • Reduces fine lines & wrinkles
  • Fights free radicals
  • Visible same-day results

HIFU SygmaLIFT Facelift

HIFU SygmaLIFT facelift entirely transforms facelifts into a pain-free, injection-free and surgical-free experience. The treatment consists of focal lines and micro-ultrasounds to rejuvenate the face non-invasively.

It concentrates 1000 intersecting beams of ultrasound energy at a target depth in the skin tissue with extreme precision. Each beam of energy creates a progressive thermal and mechanical action that enhances the drainage of fat cells and eliminates it.

The treatment is able to target the eyes, forehead and mouth, and is clinically proven to stimulate bioactivity, remodel collagen fibres, promote oxygenation and regenerate tissue from the inside-out.

The result is a HIFU procedure that is comparable to a full facelift, mini facelift or other surgical procedures and surgical facelifts by plastic surgeons.

By tightening and lifting not just the skin layer, this type of facelift is perfect for facial contouring and treating sagging skin or excess skin in areas like your chin, jaw and eyebrow.

What are some of the benefits of HIFU SygmaLIFT?

  • Increased skin hydration and moisture retention

  • Accelerate skin repair and healing

Acne is a part of everyone’s life when growing up and even in our adult years, we can still face acne for a variety of reasons. If you’re reading this article and you’re wondering if you’re the only person facing these troubles, know that you’re not alone! Acne and acne scarring affect a lot more people than you think. Each year in the developed world 100 million patients acquire scars, some of which cause serious problems. [1]

It can be frustrating to see that one pimple you popped become a scar. The good news is that acne scarring is something you can treat with the right professional treatment. As we share the various types of home treatments below, do note that they do not get rid of acne scarring but rather only reduces the appearance of them.

Types of Acne Scarring

When a pimple has been popped, it is a wound your body will attempt to heal and scarring will occur as not enough collagen is being produced during that process. Acne scars most often occur due to cysts, pustules, and/or papules – all of which are inflamed lesions as our follicles get clogged up with an excess of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria.

If the rupture is near the skin’s surface, the lesion will be able to heal quickly and is usually minor. However, serious lesions happen when deep breaks in the follicle wall arise. When such a deep break happens, the infected materials spills onto the dermis and destroys healthy skin tissue.

To then repair this, our skin forms new collagen fibres. However, the formation of new collagen never looks as smooth as before the injury on account of how deep the wound was.

So let’s get into the different types of scaring that we may already have or have seen before.

Atrophic or Depressed Scars

Atrophic scars are the scars that you have most likely already seen before or already have. These scars are the most common on the face and they can be identified as a depressed scar that sits below the surrounding skin. [2]

The atrophic scars are: boxcar, ice pick and rolling.

Boxcar scars are wide, U-shaped scars that have sharp edges. They can be either shallow or deep and the shallower they are, the more they respond to treatment.

Ice pick scars are narrow, V-shaped scars that go deep into the skin like its name. On the surface, they look like small round or oval holes much like a chickenpox scar. These types of scars are often the most difficult to treat on account of how deep they can go.

Rolling scars are wide depressions that will usually have round edges and have an irregular, rolling-like appearance.

Hypertrophic or Raised Scars

More commonly found on the chest and back, these types of scars are raised above the skin’s surface because there was too much collagen found during the healing process.

Home Remedies to Reduce the Appearance of Acne Scars

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in most acne skincare products. The acid can help to clear dirt, skin cells and other debris from the pores of the skin that can lead to acne. Besides being a good cleanser, it also helps to reduce the appearance of swelling and redness, minimising the appearance of existing scars.

Beneficial for all scar types, it is an easy addition to your daily skincare routine. However, those with sensitive skin types are recommended to test a small amount of this product on your skin before using it on your face as it may cause dryness or irritation.

Retinoids

Topical retinoids help to block inflammation, reduce acne and speed up cell regeneration. Retinoids can also help to brighten pigmented acne scars including darker skin tones. However, retinoids are commonly known to make the skin sensitive when exposed to the sun. After using them, don’t forget your sunscreen when heading out.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) may be recommended by doctors when treating acne to help get rid of dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. AHAs can also be used in reducing the appearance of acne scars. They are a mild form of acid that helps to remove the outer layer of skin, revealing new skin that can also help discolouration in scarring.

Lactic Acid

A gentle peel to rid the skin of dead skin cells, lactic acid can also help to reduce the appearance of scars and smooth the overall texture of your skin. However, it is best to test lactic acid on a small patch of skin as it can also cause hyperpigmentation. Many skin care products contain lactic acid and are even present in natural remedies such as diluted apple cider vinegar.

However, treating acne scars at home may not fully achieve the reduction of acne scars despite following your skincare routine religiously. At Cambridge Therapeutics, we have a variety of services that can treat acne scars professionally such as LDM-Tech, JetPRO Facial, Neogen Plasma and Venus Viva.

LDM - Tech Skin Rejuvenation

LDM-Tech is a treatment that utilises ultrasonic energy at a significantly higher frequency. By creating a strong micro massaging effect, it allows protein structures within the skin to tighten. It also allows for the enhancement of collagen cross-linking which increases the elasticity of the skin for a firmer, more even tone.

This method of treatment is non-invasive and there is no pain to the skin. It allows for quick and visible results that are suitable for all skin types and even with other forms of treatment that you might be considering.

We would recommend consulting with the therapist if you are suitable for this treatment. For our latest promotions, visit our LDM-Tech Skin Rejuvenation treatment here.

With the pandemic dragging on much longer than expected, masks are officially here to stay. This also means we tend to immediately focus on our eyes and everyone else’s. Our eyes are extremely important and they have been very important culturally for a very long time. Eyelid surgery has become a popular tool for enhancing our eye beauty.

Throughout history, we have been enhancing our eyes through kohl, colour and other various ways to make them appear even larger than they usually are. In our time today, it is no different and is increasingly normal to seek ways to make these adjustments permanent even without makeup. Eye lifting surgeries are an increasingly popular and common way to inject fresh new life into your face but are an invasive treatment and might not be what you’re looking for.

Besides eye lifting surgeries, there are also temporary alternative methods such as eye masks, facial masks and non-invasive aesthetic treatments such as the HIFU Eyelift SygmaLift treatment offered at Cambridge Therapeutics.

Eye Lift Eyelid Surgery

Woman undergoing Eyelid surgery

Eyelift surgeries (or Blepharoplasty), is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. In 2016, 209,000 eyelid surgeries were performed, which was a 2 percent increase from the number of eyelid surgeries performed in 2015. [1]

Different from what we in Asia are more familiar with (Asian eyelid surgery to create double eyelids), eye lift surgeries are done to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and to reduce bagginess on the lower eyelids.

This is an easy and effective way that many people opt to get an instant lift and this procedure has not lost its popularity despite the pandemic. We also predict it may get even more popular especially since we will only be showing our eyes for the years to come.

The Advantages of Eyelift Surgeries:

  • Improves sight in older people where eyelids have sagged and are now obstructing their vision
  • Makes your eyes appear larger
  • Makes you look younger

Eye Masks

Eye patch

Face masks on the whole are a quick and easy way to add moisture and firmness to the skin. They are affordable, cooling and easy to afford. What people tend to leave out most of the time are eye masks. They can really improve the impact of how your dark circles or eye bags look. Like face masks, they are easy to incorporate into your daily skincare routine.

The skin beneath our eyes is very thin and it is easy to see what lies underneath if we do not take care of them regularly. Eye masks cannot solve all of your troubles but they can help to lighten the load. With more time spent staring at the screen especially if we’re used to working well into the night, eye masks can be a lifesaver.

Several eye masks target the different eye issues we may experience but in general, eye masks will help to brighten, firm and hydrate your eyes. If you have trouble finding an eye mask that might work for you and are looking for a more permanent change to your under-eye areas, it could be a sign that eye masks are no longer working for you and that you might need to seek professional treatments.

Face Masks

Facial mask

However, if you already have face masks or are planning to purchase some, face masks can also help to brighten your under-eye areas but may not be as effective or targeted as eye masks can be because they were not made to target your under-eye areas specifically but focus on the overall improvement of your face instead.

Face masks come in a wider range of textures, colours, ingredients and can be what you’re looking for if you also want to give your entire face a quick lift. Face masks can help to give a youthful glow to the skin, hydrate, brighten and plump up the skin. A face mask can also be worn at night or be made from natural ingredients found in your kitchen.

Like any skincare product you buy, it is important to first research how the mask can meet your needs and to evaluate what type of skin issues you are seeking to solve. This can help the process of your search and save you time from purchasing an unsuitable product.

HIFU Eyelift SygmaLift Eyelid Surgery

Cambridge Therapeutics offers a non-invasive alternative to surgical facelifts that are also beneficial in addressing under eye issues. Using micro-ultrasound the treatment rejuvenates the face and targets the skin tissue with precision. Face masks and eye masks may be more affordable but in the long run, might not be able to offer you the solutions you seek.

With the HIFU SygmaLift, we can target the 3 depths of skin barriers to stimulate collagen production and to give the skin a facelift and to retain moisture. By targeting the eyes, forehead and mouth, it has been clinically proven to stimulate bioactivity, remodel collagen fibres, promote oxygenation and regenerate tissue from the inside-out. Did you know that most women get stressed over the physical signs of ageing? Undereye circles, fine lines, wrinkles, dry skin, and age spots are just a few griefs of getting older that causes us to lose sleep. While plastic surgery is rising in popularity, going under the blade comes with significant risks that make you think long and hard, along with the hefty price tag that comes with it. Fortunately, it is possible to restore a youthful glow without a medical procedure.

What Happens As We Age

As we age, the fibres responsible for giving our complexions a firm, smooth appearance grows weaker, leaving us with wrinkles and sagging skin. Production of collagen slows down, and the elasticity of our youthful skin begins to diminish as other factors come into play. [1] After age 30, the collagen levels in your skin and body begin to drop by 1-2% each year. [2]

One of the factors is the loss of fat in our faces. The soft, full, and glowing look we associate with youth is gone as bone structures changes, and facial fats disappear, leaving us with sagging, loose skin.

Another major culprit responsible for our more matured look is the sun. Years of unprotected sun exposure and baking in tanning beds show up on our faces as wrinkles, fine lines, pigmented areas, and rough patches. As if this is not enough bad news, the little oil glands that keep our skin soft and supple reduce leading to dry skin as we age.

How Can We Appear Younger

Regardless of the number of candles are on your birthday cake this year, there are numerous ways you can turn around the signs of ageing for a more young, dynamic look. The best part is that you will not have to go under the blade. We have listed three different at-home remedies and an aesthetic treatment you can opt for to look more youthful without a medical procedure.

1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been all the rage for its anti-ageing properties. It can improve your skin's appearance and texture to look younger. Vitamin C is among the three antioxidants proven to reduce the sun's harmful effect on the skin and potentially prevent future sun damage. Additionally, it also encourages collagen production to promote skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This super antioxidant targets stubborn skin discolouration and reduces the presence of redness, dark circles and hyperpigmentation. [3]

The best way to incorporate Vitamin C into your skincare routine is through a serum. After toning and cleansing, spread a tiny amount of vitamin c serum on your face and let it absorb for a few minutes before continuing with the rest of your skincare routine.

2. Vitamin A

The wrinkles and freckles we associate with ageing appear most prominently on the skin that has been exposed to the sun. Vitamin A, which is otherwise labelled as retinol, helps blur dark spots and stimulates new skin cells' production. These are only the serums and creams available over-the-counter.

Clinical-strength retinoids can restore the skin by treating inflammation, reducing fine lines' appearance, and evening out your skin tone. Other than boosting collagen production and treating the signs of ageing that are already visible, vitamin A can also prevent future sun damage potentially. [4]

Dermatologists recommend applying retinol as part of your nighttime skincare routine. However, due to its strong intensity, start slowly and build up your skin's tolerance to avoid redness, flakiness, or a burning sensation. Make sure to apply retinol sparingly around your eye area, which is usually one of the first visible signs of ageing. Retinol takes about 3 months to produce noticeable anti-ageing benefits, so incorporate it in your skincare routine for at least 3 months to notice results.

3. Makeup

The least invasive at-home remedy on our list is one you may already possess in your cosmetic bag. When applied with the right technique, makeup can transform your appearance and minimise the appearance of the physical signs of ageing.

To start off, use a primer to create a smooth complexion. This helps reduce the presence of large pores and fine lines by filling them in before you put on the rest of your makeup. Then, go in with foundation using a beauty blender or your fingers. To avoid an obvious line, blend along your jaw.

To achieve fake full lips, find a lip liner that matches your natural lip tone and lightly draw over your lips' border for a fuller pout. Top with a sheer gloss for a finished look. Bold and defined eyebrows can likewise make you look more youthful. Search for a brow pencil that is a combination between a pencil and a powder to fill in any holes and create the illusion of fuller brows.

For enhancement of the eyes, utilise a cream shadow in a neutral shade and apply powder illuminator to the inner corner of your eyes. Cream and silicone-based cosmetics work best for ageing complexions as they blend into the skin and offer a perfect, natural-looking finish. Avoid powder as this can settle into your fine lines and can make the signs of ageing more evident.

4. SygmaLIFT HIFU Facelift

Cambridge Therapeutics offers SygmaLIFT's latest second-generation HIFU facelift (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) as one of the newest treatment for non-surgical facelifts. This entirely transforms facelifts into a pain-free, injection-free and surgical-free experience for all users.

The treatment consists of focal lines and micro-ultrasound to rejuvenate the face non-invasively. It concentrates 1000 intersecting beams of ultrasound energy at a target depth in the skin tissue with extreme precision. Each beam of energy creates a progressive thermal and mechanical action that enhances the drainage of fat cells and eliminates it.

HIFU SygmaLIFT facelift has an innovative Tri-Micro Focal Ultrasound feature that allows it to target 3 depths of skin (at 1mm, 1.5mm, and 2mm) production of collagen and to stimulate collagen production. This triple focal pulsed mode can target the eyes, forehead and mouth, and is clinically proven to stimulate bioactivity, remodel collagen fibres, promote oxygenation and regenerate tissue from the inside-out. The result is a HIFU procedure comparable to a full facelift, mini facelift or other surgical procedures and surgical facelifts by plastic surgeons. By tightening and lifting, not just the skin layer, this type of facelift is perfect for facial contouring and treating sagging skin or excess skin.

HIFU SygmaLIFT facelift also incorporates Cold Laser technology to promote healing and tissue repair further. The 635nm red laser works at 2 levels of the skin – at the epidermis and deeper subcutaneous tissue, to increase collagen synthesis and growth factor production.

Benefits of SygmaLIFT HIFU Facelift:

  • Increases skin hydration and moisture retention
  • Calms redness and inflammation
  • Accelerates skin repair and healing
  • Evens skin tone and texture
  • Stimulates circulation within the skin

SygmaLift HIFU Facelift can treat the face by:

  • Contouring the chin and jaw-line
  • Tightening and rejuvenating the skin
  • Contouring the eyes
  • Lifting the eyebrows
  • Softens fine lines

Cambridge Therapeutics recommends 3-6 sessions, once a week. Results can be viewed immediately and can last up to 12 months.

SygmaLIFT HIFU Facelift is a better option if you are looking for long term permanent results to diminish the signs of ageing.

The Needleless Rejuran Procedure

Needleless Rejuran is a relatively advanced treatment that has been established into the aesthetic world where the serum is distributed and cast deep into the dermis without harming the surrounding skin cells and tissues through a non-intrusive method. This clinically proven procedure yields immediate results via a transdermal delivery system to successfully issue the serum, Rejuran Booster without the use of needles, no pain, and no downtime.

At Cambridge Medical, we administer the Rejuran Booster with the help of our technology, JetPRO. With an entirely new concept, Needleless Rejuran doesn’t just brighten and heal the skin, but also repairs while correcting ageing issues through treatments that are comfortable and soothing.

The Needleless Rejuran procedure lasts around 45 minutes, not including the consultation. Once the treatment is over, patients will be able to return to their daily routine. On certain occasions, some patients may encounter a little swelling and redness in the treated areas. This tends to settle down within a few hours so they should not worry. After the treatment, patients should also avoid excessive heat, sports and exercises for a day.

Step 1: Lymphatic Drainage

A pleasant and relaxing massage for detoxifying the skin and stimulating micro-circulation.

Step 2: HydraDermabrasion

Removal of dead skin cells to prepare the skin to receive nourishment when infusing Rejuran.

Step 3: Needleless Rejuran
  • Delivers fine misty jet streams of high-velocity Rejuran at subsonic speeds.
  • Powerful jet streams that create microchannels to facilitate deep subdermal delivery of the Rejuran.

Recovery

When it comes to Needleless Rejuran, one of the points to note is that the device, JetPRO does not use any needles, and there is no skin breakage at all. Therefore, the treatment is 100% comfortable, painless with zero downtime. Patients will be able to resume their daily routine after the treatment. Some of the patients occasionally could encounter redness and some swelling in the areas treated though that usually calms down within a few hours.

Results can be noticed instantly after the first sessions for most clients. Cambridge Therapeutics recommends 3 sessions at an interval of 3 weeks for best results. Another point to note is that to notice any visible improvements in the skin will take some time as the PDRN ingredient takes a certain duration to show the skin effects and repair the skin from the inside.

Did you know that your skin can deteriorate due to various stimuli such as pollution or extended exposure to ultraviolet rays? These external factors can bring about a decrease in collagen and elastin, thinning of the dermal layer, as well as a decrease in skin elasticity. From the age of 25 onwards, skin ageing affects both men and women [1] and by healing the skin from the inside out, Rejuran counters these effects of ageing.

What exactly is Rejuran?

Rejuran Healer is a new concept of a skin healing treatment that has encountered much fame especially in Korea and Japan, leading to other Asian countries. It gained popularity for offering effective reduction and healing signs of ageing, by leaving the skin, soft, smooth, luminous, and much more hydrated.

Comprised of polynucleotides (PN), or polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), these are derived from salmon DNA for its unique skin rejuvenating properties especially when it meets human skin. As it is similar to human DNA, the serum has been used for aesthetic purposes such as anti-ageing treatments, skin rejuvenation and skin regeneration.

rejuran chemical formula

Traditionally, Rejuran Healer is delivered via several injection points. These injection points cause bumps all over the face leading to longer downtime and healing. People began looking for painless, needleless alternatives and we answered by introducing the Needleless Rejuran. Individuals will face no needles, no pain, no scarring and no downtime and yet experience visible same-day results.

Is Rejuran really made from Salmon Sperm?

Yes, Rejuran is composed of a DNA fragment, PDRN, that is extracted from salmon sperm. The products also do not contain any odours of fish as it has been processed and purified for the use of medical aesthetics. Rejuran is stable, safe, and biocompatible with human skin. [2]

The other 5 ingredients that make up Rejuran Booster - Hyaluronic Acid, Panthenol, Vitamin C, GSH Antioxidant, Anti-Pigmentation Agent - has been noted to help with cell regeneration and repair as it has effective brightening and potent regenerative qualities, encourages elastin and collagen production, aids in maintaining the skin elasticity as well as firming and toning. Rejuran also provides anti-inflammatory benefits that help in tissue and wound repair. [3] To summarise, if you are looking to slow down the signs of ageing, you can consider Needleless Rejuran.

What is the difference between PDRN & PN?

Polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN) is a subtype of Polynucleotides (PN) though they both have healing and anti-ageing effects. PDRN helps in effectively healing the skin structure while PN works to act as structural support as the skin heals and stays in the skin longer.

How can Rejuran be administered without needles?

Introduced as an innovative concept to the aesthetic world, Needleless Rejuran is a clinically proven procedure with no needles, no pain, and no downtime. The device distributes instant product penetration deep into the dermis via a non-invasive method that is comfortable and relaxing, without ever hurting the surrounding skin cells and tissues. In comparison to injections, that form micro-wound openings, leading to longer downtime for healing and recovery.

Through a transdermal delivery system, we use the advanced technology JetPRO to administer the Rejuran into the skin. The entire treatment lasts just 45 minutes; however, patients will discover that the procedure allows them to discover the very best version of themselves with confidence through the calming, comfortable, relaxing and effective treatment process that is Needleless Rejuran.

Is Rejuran safe if I am allergic to Salmon?

Rejuran is derived from Salmon DNA, hence, individuals who are allergic to salmon or seafood are advised not to try the treatment.

Will I get the same effect as a Rejuran Healer injection?

Only 70-80% of the Rejuran applied to the skin will be absorbed and delivered. 20-30% of the product will remain on the surface. In comparison, the Rejuran injection method has an 80-95% product penetration and absorption.

Is Needleless Rejuran painful?

One of the points most noteworthy about Needleless Rejuran is that the device, JetPRO, uses no needles and that there is no skin breakage at all. This emphasises that the treatment is 100% non-invasive, comfortable, painless, with zero downtime. Patients can go back to their daily routine promptly after the treatment with no healing time.

In fact, our clients often raved that the Needleless Rejuran is comfortable, relaxing and therapeutic!

What are the benefits of the Needleless Rejuran?

Needleless Rejuran actively revitalises the skin by promoting growth by improving skin hydration levels and skin elasticity with anti-ageing benefits as well as reding the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, the neck, and around the eyes, for an improved skin texture that is softer and firmer.

This brings about skin normalisation, strengthens and thickens the foundational layers of the skin including regulating sebum production that promotes excellent skin regeneration effects where new skin cells form a stronger defence barrier against environment and non-environmental factors that cause premature ageing of the skin.

Needleless Rejuran also aids in improving and brightening the skin tone as well as exerting an anti-inflammatory effect to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and pigmentation disorders such as melasma.

There are several more benefits of Needleless Rejuran, and the procedure has been proven safe, with quick visible results and no adverse reactions.

  • Effectively moisturises the skin
  • Lightens hyperpigmentation and brightens skin
  • Refines skin elasticity
  • Enhances collagen & elastin scaffolding structure
  • Balances sebum and hydration levels
  • Reduces the appearance of scars and open pores
  • Aids acne-prone skin
  • Lessens fine lines & wrinkles
  • Fights free radicals
  • Noticeable results on the same day

Needleless Rejuran would be a solution for you if you’re seeking for long-lasting skin renewal and healing, wishing to restore the skin’s balance of oil and moisture, lighten up pigmentation such as age spots or sun spots and are looking to lighten them. If you have large pores and would like to improve your skin’s texture as well as even out and brighten up the skin tone. As an individual, if you are looking for a more natural alternative to treat lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead as well as combat the effects of ageing before they even show up.

How long is the Needleless Rejuran procedure?

The procedure itself takes about 60 minutes, excluding the consultation. Patients will be able to return to their daily routine once the treatment is over. Some of the patients, on certain occasions, may experience slight swelling and redness in the areas treated. They should not worry, as this calms down within a few hours. They should also avoid sports and exercise as well as excessive heat for a day after the treatment.

The procedure has 3 steps:

The treatment starts with Lymphatic Drainage that is a relaxing and pleasant massage for detoxifying the skin and stimulating micro-circulation

The next step is HydraDermabrasion, the gentle removal of dead skin cells to prepare the skin to receive nourishment when infusing Rejuran for best absorption of the serum

The last step is where we will use JetPRO to deliver powerful, fine, misty jet streams of high-velocity Rejuran to create microchannels to facilitate the deep subdermal delivery of the Rejuran.

woman getting rejuran injection without needles

Needleless Rejuran takes a certain amount of time to observe any noticeable improvements in the individual’s skin as the ingredient, PDRN, takes some time to work and show the skin effects as well as repair the skin from the inside.

Results can be seen instantly after the first session for most clients. For a treatment programme, we recommend a minimum of 6 sessions with a gap of 3-4 weeks for each session. Results can last up to 6 to 9 months, depending on aftercare, lifestyle, skin constitution, etc.

After the first round of 6 sessions, clients can also continue on a maintenance programme every 4 to 6 months.
