Back acne more commonly known as ‘bacne’ can be a frustrating addition to acne some already have to deal with on their face. Unfortunately, back acne is a common occurrence largely due to how thick the skin on our body is – the thicker it is, the harder it is for the body to clear clogged pores. Like the face, the pores in the skin contains sebaceous glands that secrete sebum (oil that keeps our skin from drying out). This can combine with sweat, dirt and bacteria accumulated throughout the day to clog the hair follicles causing the much-dreaded bacne break out.
It is more common to find bacne breakout among athletes. With the long hours of training in sometimes rough and unbreathable clothing would irritate the base of the pore (pilosebaceous unit). The friction caused by athleticwear is what causes the irritated looking bumps on the skin. If the condition worsens and the infection spreads, it can become painful pus-filled boils underneath the skin. Similarly, gym-goers who tend to avoid gym showers and opt to go home in their activewear instead have a higher chance of bacne breakouts due to the accumulation of sweat, dirt and germs in their clothes.
Androgens are hormones that increase in males and females during puberty causing the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum (oil). Hormonal changes related to pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives also can affect sebum production. Low amounts of androgens circulate in the blood of women and can lead to bacne flareups.
If those are not the culprits, then other areas of living space should be up for consideration. Bedsheets may be a cause of this due to the build-up of dead skin, dirt and bacteria that clog the pores. Another area is your hair care products. Conditioner tends to stick to the hair follicle. This can serve to clog up the pores in the back.
Lastly, the saying ‘you are what you eat’ definitely applies here. It is a well-known fact that diet high in fried, oily foods contribute to higher acne breakout rates, and if you are prone to bacne, it will be a double slammer.
Lifestyle changes along with revamping skincare routines are the first and foremost defence against bacne. However, sensitive, acne-prone skin may find this a much more stubborn condition to deal with. Despite not being life-threatening, it can affect one’s self-confidence. At Cambridge Therapeutics, we have an arsenal of high tech equipment and science-based solutions at your disposal to help deal with bacne woes.
This treatment functions by creating a strong micro massaging effect to activate protein structures that tighten skin and enhance collagen cross-linking which combats skin laxity for a more firm and even skin tone. It also aims to target the production of harmful proteins that will worsen back acne and increase the production of beneficial proteins such as GAGs and heat shock protein which improves skin immunity as a preventative measure against further breakouts.
This is a non-invasive treatment method and thus it does not induce any form of pain.

By utilising plasma (the fourth state of matter), we aim to help kill colonies of bacteria that may have to propagate within the pores to stop the spread of back acne. Furthermore, it also reduces sebum secretion which will help stop the further clogging of pores.
This treatment also has the added benefit of increasing the rate at which the skin can absorb topical creams which will drastically improve its efficacy.
